Mexico City celebrations trigger seismic tremor after national team beats Ecuador

More than one million fans filled the streets of Mexico City after the national football team defeated Ecuador 2‑0. The mass jumping, foam cannons and fireworks created enough ground vibration for local seismic monitors to record an artificial tremor, similar to a phenomenon observed during the 2018 World Cup upset.

The exuberant crowd left piles of trash and, tragically, three people – two women and a man – died of asphyxiation in the densely packed celebration on Paseo de la Reforma.
