Tamaulipas commemorates the 1829 Victory of Tampico in Mexico City

Authorities and representatives from Tamaulipas gathered at the Angel de la Independencia in Mexico City to commemorate the 197th anniversary of the Victory of Tampico of 1829. This historical event marked the defeat of a Spanish expedition of over 3,000 men, an action that helped consolidate Mexico's national sovereignty and independence.

Mónica Zacil Villarreal Anaya, the Mayor of Tampico, emphasized that the victory was achieved not only by the Mexican Army and Navy but also through the active participation of local citizens, including fishermen and farmers. In preparation for the bicentennial in 2029, organizers are planning a regional “Independence Route” to celebrate the event's national impact.

Additionally, members of the Tamaulipas community have formally requested that the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) reintegrate the Victory of Tampico into the national school calendar. Proponents argue that the event is a crucial historical milestone that should be properly addressed in textbooks to ensure new generations understand its role in securing the nation's independence.
