Mexico City Congress building hit by transformer explosion
An explosion occurred during the early hours of Thursday at the Rosario Ibarra de Piedra building, an administrative facility for the Mexico City Congress located on Avenida Juárez. The incident was caused by a transformer explosion following an electrical failure, reportedly triggered by rainwater entering the building.
Authorities, including the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection, confirmed that there were no injuries or structural damage. The blast resulted in material damage to the building's facade, glass, aluminum, and finishes across five levels. Emergency responders, including firefighters and personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission, attended the scene.
Olivia Garza de los Santos, President of the Congress Board of Directors, visited the site to assess the situation. Legislative activities scheduled for Thursday will continue at the Donceles Chamber while technical reports are awaited to determine the full extent of the operational impact and any necessary safety measures.
