Mexico City Congress promotes sonidero culture in public spaces
The Mexico City Congress has approved a proposal to strengthen and coordinate the promotion of sonidero culture, particularly in the southern region of the capital. The initiative, presented by Deputy Juana María Juárez López, issues a formal exhortation to the Mexico City Ministry of Culture and the leadership of several boroughs, including Xochimilco, Tlalpan, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Coyoacán, and Magdalena Contreras.
The goal is to facilitate the use of public spaces for sonidero presentations, ensuring they occur in safe, family-friendly environments. This move follows the official recognition of sonidero culture as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mexico City on October 6, 2023. The proposal highlights the role of sonideros in the city's identity and their historical presence in traditional festivities and community celebrations.
