Mexico City court upholds dismissal of inspector in Rébsamen school tragedy

A Mexican court has upheld the dismissal of a SEP inspector who had certified the Colegio Enrique Rébsamen as a safe space just seven days before the September 19, 2017, earthquake. During an inspection on September 12, 2017, inspector Claudia Fabiola García Pérez recorded that no residential or commercial facilities had direct communication with the school.

However, the school's owner and director, Mónica García Villegas, had added an unauthorized apartment to the administrative building. Criminal authorities concluded that this unpermitted structure caused the building to collapse during the earthquake, as the original design could not support the additional weight. The collapse resulted in 26 deaths, including 19 minors.

The Internal Control Body of the Federal Educational Authority for Mexico City dismissed García Pérez in March 2021 due to omissions during the inspection. On May 13, the Superior Chamber of the Federal Court of Administrative Justice unanimously confirmed the dismissal, ruling against the former official's appeal.
