Mexico City declares traditional sweet bread making cultural heritage

Mexico City has officially declared the knowledge and practices of traditional sweet bread (pan dulce) production as part of the city’s intangible cultural heritage. A decree issued by Head of Government Clara Brugada Molina recognizes the social and cultural value of these artisanal techniques, which have evolved from Spanish influences into a unique local system of knowledge passed down through generations.

The designation aims to safeguard traditional baking methods, promote their values, and dignify the community of bakers. The decree notes that bread has become an inherent element of various social, ritual, and secular celebrations in the city.

To celebrate this tradition, the First Mexican Sweet Bread Festival will be held from September 11 to 13, 2026, at the Utopía Elena Poniatowska Amor in Coyoacán. The event will feature over 30 producers and include a “Museum of Sweet Bread,” which will showcase approximately 500 varieties, including 50 types of bread that are considered extinct or nearly disappeared due to mass production.
