Mexico City Deputy demands permanent strategy against property theft

Mexico City Deputy Liz Salgado has called on the local government and the Attorney General's Office to establish a permanent, transparent strategy to combat the theft and illegal dispossession of real estate.

While recent reports indicate that 44 arrests were made and 89 complaints were received during the first 12 days of a new enforcement strategy, Salgado warned that these figures do not address the massive scale of the issue. Since 2020, more than 25,000 complaints of property dispossession have accumulated, yet only 463 people have been prosecuted—less than 2 percent of the total reported cases.

Salgado is requesting detailed information regarding the functioning of the Cabinet for the Prevention and Attention to Dispossession, specifically seeking clarity on restitution criteria, the handling of long-standing open case files, and investigations into potential complicity networks.
