Mexico City expands Cablebús network with new long-distance line

Mexico City is advancing the construction of Cablebús Line 5, a project expected to become the world’s longest urban cable car system. Spanning nearly 16 kilometers with 12 stations, the line will connect the Álvaro Obregón and La Magdalena Contreras areas with Mixcoac, aiming to benefit over 200,000 people daily by reducing travel times in congested sectors. The project is estimated to reach approximately 40% completion by the end of 2026.

Separately, the Servicio de Transportes Eléctricos (STE) has concluded annual safety inspections for the three existing Cablebús lines. Following these reviews, safety certifications from international organizations were ratified. Lines 1 and 3 were evaluated under the supervision of TÜV SÜD, while Line 2 received certification from Seilbahnbüro Schupfer. The inspections included testing mechanical, electrical, and structural components, as well as load and braking exercises, to ensure safe daily operations.
