Mexico City expands Ecobici system to nine boroughs

Mexico City officials have announced a major expansion and renewal of the Ecobici public bicycle system. Under the leadership of Mayor Clara Brugada, the service will expand into the Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan boroughs for the first time, bringing the total number of boroughs served to nine.

The expansion includes increasing the fleet from 9,308 to 15,000 bicycles and growing the number of cycle stations from 687 to 1,111. The new units will feature satellite geolocation technology and undergo a total replacement process over the next nine months. The annual subscription fee will remain at 588 pesos.

Mobility Secretary Héctor Ulises García Nieto confirmed that the company 5M2-BKT Bicicleta Pública won an international tender to manage the system through 2036. A key component of the new contract is that all infrastructure, including bicycles, stations, and technology, will become public property at the end of the 10-year term. The government also established penalties for the operator if they fail to replace damaged units promptly.
