Thousands of protesters, led by the families of the 43 Ayotzinapa students, marched through Mexico City to demand truth and justice 12 years after the students' disappearance in 2014. The demonstration, which moved from the Angel of Independence to the Zócalo, featured participants carrying symbolic coffins and chanting, “Vivos los llevaron, vivos los queremos!” (They took them alive, we want them back alive!).

President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced she will present a report on new lines of investigation this coming Monday following an exhaustive review by the attorney general’s office. This follows a week of protests by families in front of federal institutions. The case remains a significant symbol of impunity and alleged state involvement in cartel violence.

In recent developments, former Guerrero governor Ángel Aguirre was detained in August on accusations of concealing evidence to hide the whereabouts of the students. Families and their legal representative, Isidoro Vicario, have also criticized recent government stances that appear to distance the military from responsibility, noting that a 2022 commission previously labeled the event a “crime of State” involving direct military participation. The families continue to demand the extradition of Tomás Zeró from Israel and the full disclosure of information held by the Secretariat of National Defense.
