Mexico City fans gather at Angel of Independence to thank national soccer team

The Mexico City Secretariat of Public Security deployed a security and traffic operation around the Angel of Independence after hundreds of supporters assembled to thank the national soccer team for its World Cup performance. Authorities collected and destroyed alcoholic cans and glass containers, stating the measure was “with the aim of preventing incidents among attendees.” The gathering follows earlier celebrations that left five people dead, mostly from crowd‑asphyxia, and hundreds injured. Civil groups called for stricter controls on alcohol consumption at such events.

In a separate festive activity, the city organized a temporary football tournament at the Insurgentes roundabout, featuring 17 mascot characters representing various police sub‑departments. The makeshift pitch was built by inmates from a local prison, and the competition concluded with the mascots Zorro and Sonic winning the trophy shaped like the World Cup.
