Mexico City hosts 18th Monumental Alebrijes Parade
The 18th edition of the Monumental Alebrijes Parade and Contest, organized by the Museo de Arte Popular, took place in Mexico City, marking the start of the Day of the Dead festivities. Approximately 300 massive, colorful fantasy creatures created by artisans from 11 Mexican states paraded through the historic center, moving from the Zócalo through Eje Central and Avenida Juárez to Paseo de la Reforma, concluding near the Diana Cazadora fountain.
The event featured 28 musical bands and various dance groups. Notably, three of the monumental figures were crafted by individuals in correctional facilities as part of social reintegration programs. The tradition, rooted in the imagination of artisan Pedro Linares López, continues to be a major cultural symbol of Mexico.
Following the parade, the sculptures will remain on public display along Paseo de la Reforma, spanning the area from the Angel of Independence to the Estela de Luz, until November 8.
