Mexico City housing faces deed shortages and new rental initiatives

Mexico City faces significant housing challenges regarding legal security and affordability. Approximately 49% of property owners in the capital lack formal deeds, leaving an estimated 1.48 million homes vulnerable to real estate dispossession. Federico Sobrino, president of the Ibero-American Academy of Real Estate Studies, warned that without proper documentation, criminal groups may exploit legal loopholes regarding possession to claim ownership of properties.

In response to housing shortages, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada Molina announced a new initiative set to launch in 2026. The program will provide 1,000 affordable rental units, with priority given to young residents. Additionally, the administration is focusing on youth support through universal university scholarships, which are expected to benefit approximately 200,000 students this year, alongside investments in secondary and higher education infrastructure.
