Mexico City launches “Código 1” community policing program

The Mexico City government has launched “Código 1: Policía en tu calle” (Code 1: Police in your street), a new community policing model designed to increase security presence in all neighborhoods, not just main avenues.

Under this program, patrols will operate from 5:00 to 21:00 hours, covering all streets within assigned quadrants. In certain strategic areas, specialized units will maintain a 24-hour presence. The strategy includes the deployment of 2,044 patrol units and 8,017 police officers to cover the city's 847 quadrants. To support these efforts, the administration has acquired 3,500 new patrol vehicles and increased the number of surveillance cameras to approximately 120,000.

A key component of the initiative is the “Red de Enlaces por la Paz” (Peace Links Network), composed of voluntary neighborhood representatives chosen through local assemblies. These residents act as verifiers to ensure police presence in their streets and maintain communication with security forces, though they do not participate in active security tasks or risk-prone activities.
