Mexico City launches prison writing workshop to aid inmate reintegration

The Government of Mexico City, through the Secretaría de Gobierno (SEGOB) and the Instituto de Reinserción Social (IRS) in coordination with the Subsecretaría del Sistema Penitenciario, organized a creative‑writing program called “Renglones y realidades. Un encuentro con la escritura.” The workshop was held in three male penitentiaries – Reclusorios Preventivos Varonil Oriente, Varonil Norte and the Centro Varonil de Reinserción Social Santa Martha Acatitla – and consisted of 13 weekly three‑hour sessions led by teacher Daniel Torres Nishisawa. Participants engaged in brain‑gym exercises, writing‑sensitization activities, personal narrative sharing and reading aloud, with the aim of fostering self‑knowledge, resilience, identity, communication skills and agency to support social reintegration. At the conclusion, recognitions were awarded to inmates who completed the course. Director Cinthia Guadarrama Godínez highlighted the institute’s ongoing commitment to such educational initiatives, and Governor Clara Brugada Molina reaffirmed the city’s policy of promoting human‑rights‑based reintegration programs.
