Mexico City legislators demand stronger women protection and appointment of Women Secretariat chief

Jesús Sesma, president of the Mesa Directiva of the Mexico City Congress, urged the city to strengthen its protection network for women victims of gender violence. He highlighted the federal allocation of five million pesos to the Capital’s Attorney General's Office to expand a shelter for women at risk and their children, and called for better‑trained prosecutors, investigators and support staff. Sesma noted a recent constitutional reform that includes provisions for specialized prosecutors with gender‑perspective training.

Meanwhile, federal deputies from the PAN pressed President Claudia Sheinbaum to promptly name a permanent head of the Secretariat of Women. The legislators argued that without a designated chief, the Secretariat cannot implement focused policies, and they criticized the delay as evidence that women’s issues are not a priority for the current administration.
