Mexico City legislators propose caregiver status for families of inmates
The Mexico City Congress is reviewing a legislative proposal to officially recognize the families of incarcerated individuals as caregivers. Introduced by Deputy Rebeca Peralta of the Green Party, the initiative seeks to amend the City's Care System Law to grant these families priority access to existing care provisions.
Peralta argued that the consequences of imprisonment extend beyond prison walls, affecting mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters who manage household stability and family support while a relative is detained. The proposal follows criticism that the Care System Law, promulgated in July, omitted these families despite their participation in previous public forums. Currently, five legal injunctions have been filed to compel lawmakers to include this group in the legislation.
