Mexico City mayor Sheinbaum faces CNTE protest over possible Fan Fest cancellation

President‑governor Claudia Sheinbaum said the large public viewing event for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Fan Fest planned for Mexico City’s Zócalo, could be cancelled because of ongoing protests by the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE). She announced she would confirm later whether the event will proceed.

Social‑media users criticised the decision, posting comments such as, “¿Crees que logren un acuerdo con la CNTE el día de hoy? Si no mañana se va a poner más cabrón,” and accusing the administration of yielding to the teachers’ union. The CNTE announced it will hold a demonstration outside the Secretary of Government’s offices and continue its sit‑in near the historic centre until its demands are met.

Because of security and cost concerns, several municipalities – including Veracruz – will not install large screens for the public viewing, and private venues have imposed fines for unauthorized broadcasts. Sheinbaum listed 18 alternative sites across the city where the World Cup opening match and subsequent games can be shown, ranging from parks and sports complexes to community centres.
