Mexico City Metro completes Line 2 modernization, readies Line 3 upgrades

The Mexico City Metro announced the completion of an integral modernization of three Line 2 stations—Bellas Artes, Hidalgo and Allende—spending a total of 2.2 billion pesos, of which 1.5 billion came from the federal government. Two‑thirds of the budget was directed to maintenance, including structural repairs, hydraulic and electrical system upgrades, and the recovery of six trains, raising the line’s fleet from 28 to 34 units. The works added 1,000 new luminaires, 202 surveillance cameras, new murals, turnstiles, escalators and extensive floor and wall renovations. Audits by the Auditoría Superior de la Federación and the Auditoría Superior de la Ciudad de México are reviewing the project’s costs, including the 56,000‑peso candelabros at Hidalgo (total 224,000 pesos) and green‑wall installations priced at 5,600 pesos per square metre. A maintenance contract will replace any failing green‑wall plants after an initial seven‑month period. The government also outlined plans for a Line 3 renovation that will follow the low‑impact approach used on Line 2, with a detailed schedule to be announced in early July. In parallel, the Metro is seeking in‑kind compensation from Chinese supplier CRRC for a 27‑month delay in Line 1 upgrades, aiming to acquire new trains for other lines. The combined effort is intended to improve safety, reliability and capacity for the more than one million daily riders on Line 2.
