Mexico City officials consider cell phone lockers for schools
The Secretariat of Education (SEP) and the Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation (SECTEI) are conducting meetings to determine if basic education schools in Mexico City will receive government support to install cell phone lockers.
The proposal aims to provide a secure way for students to store devices during school hours to reduce classroom distractions and protect children's digital rights. If approved, the manufacturing of these lockers would be assigned to inmates at the Reclusorio Sur through the ‘Hazme Valer’ penitentiary program.
The initiative is not an immediate mandatory rule for all schools but rather an institutional framework to provide infrastructure to campuses that choose to restrict device use in their regulations.
