Mexico City officials tighten safety protocols after gas explosions

Following a gas explosion in the Álvaro Obregón borough of Mexico City that killed two people and injured 14, local legislators are calling for strengthened safety protocols regarding LP gas usage. Data indicates approximately 4,500 gas leak emergencies have occurred in the capital between January 2019 and January 2026. In response, Mayor Clara Brugada announced financial aid for affected families, including 200,000 pesos for families, 40,000 pesos for the families of the deceased, and 15,000 pesos for those seriously injured. The city also offers free gas and smoke detectors and no-cost inspections by firefighters.

Simultaneously, authorities are developing a new protocol for the use and handling of pyrotechnics across the city's 16 boroughs. This initiative follows a recent incident in Gustavo A. Madero where a rocket hit a home, causing a gas tank explosion. Myriam Urzúa, Secretary of Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection, stated that while the ultimate goal is to prohibit fireworks, the government is currently focusing on strict monitoring, permit guidelines, and supervision during patron saint festivals to prevent further tragedies.
