Mexico City protests block streets ahead of World Cup opening match
On 11 June, seven protest groups will march toward Estadio Banorte in Mexico City as the 2026 World Cup opening match between Mexico and South Africa begins. The demonstrators plan to close major thoroughfares, including Calzada de Tlalpan, Periférico Sur (especially the Vaqueritos, San Jerónimo and Hospital Picacho sections), Avenida del Imán, Insurgentes Sur, Paseo de la Reforma and Santa Úrsula. The closures are expected to be most severe between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
City authorities advise residents and fans to avoid driving, arrive before 7 a.m. or after 3 p.m., and use public transport. Recommended options are Metro Line 2 (Tasqueña) and Line 3 (Universidad) with connections to the Tren Ligero, as well as Metrobús Line 1. Taxi‑apps and ride‑hailing services are also discouraged in the southern zones after 10 a.m. The Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has issued a similar warning, urging passengers to arrive early in case of related demonstrations. The combined protests and World Cup festivities are expected to cause significant traffic congestion and require alternate routing for commuters.
