Mexico reports 51% drop in daily intentional homicides FAST-MOVING
President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Mexican security cabinet reported a 51 percent reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides between September 2024 and July 2026. The daily average dropped from 86.9 to 42.5, marking the lowest July average since 2015.
Despite this national decline, crime remains highly concentrated. Seven states—Guanajuato, Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Guerrero, and Morelos—account for 49 percent of the country's intentional homicides. In particular, Guanajuato remains the state with the highest proportion of national homicides, though it has seen a 76 percent reduction in its daily average since February 2025.
Other security indicators show improvements, including a decrease in feminicides, extortion, and kidnappings. In Mexico City, July 2026 saw the lowest homicide count for that month in 12 years. However, the federal government faces challenges with prison overcrowding, as the inmate population has grown by 15 percent to over 260,000 people. To address this, the administration is considering legal reforms and the construction of approximately six new detention centers.
