Mexico reports 51% drop in daily intentional homicides
The Mexican federal government reported a 51 percent reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides between September 2024 and July 2026. According to data presented by the National Executive Secretariat of the Public Security System (SESNSP), the daily average dropped from 86.9 cases to 42.5 in July 2026, marking the lowest monthly average since 2015.
While the national trend is downward, seven states—Guanajuato, Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Guerrero, and Morelos—continue to account for 49 percent of the country's intentional homicides. Specific regional successes include San Luis Potosí, which saw an 80.5 percent reduction in homicides from January to July 2026 compared to the previous year, and Guanajuato, which reported a 76 percent decrease in its daily average compared to February 2025.
Analysts and organizations like México Evalúa have offered a more cautious perspective, noting that while lethal violence has decreased, other forms of violence, such as disappearances and other crimes against life, have increased. Experts have called for greater transparency and auditing of official data to ensure the reported declines accurately reflect changes in criminal dynamics rather than shifts in reporting or concealment.
