Mexico City security officials study Italian prison models with UNICRI

The Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) conducted a technical workshop titled ‘The reorganization of the Italian penitentiary system: an Italy-Mexico dialogue’. The session aimed to exchange experiences to strengthen institutional capacities in prison management, security, and intelligence.

Led by specialist Vincenzo Lo Cascio, the workshop examined the historical and institutional evolution of the Italian prison system. Participants analyzed the design of specialized units and mechanisms for managing organized crime within prisons to identify parallels with the Mexican context. This initiative is part of a three-year program to strengthen penitentiary systems and social prevention policies in Mexico, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation through 2029.
