Mexico City sets 2026 deadline for permanent driver's licenses

The Mexico City government has confirmed that the program for issuing permanent driver's licenses will conclude on December 31, 2026. While existing permanent licenses will remain valid, the window for new applicants will close at the end of that year.

Since the program's inception on November 16, 2024, approximately 1.39 million permanent licenses have been issued. The initiative has generated over 2 billion pesos, which will be allocated to a trust dedicated to non-motorized mobility, road safety, and public transportation projects.

To obtain the license, applicants must provide official identification, proof of address, and a CURP, and must have no traffic-related criminal records or specific alcohol-related driving sanctions. First-time applicants are also required to pass a theoretical road knowledge exam. The cost for the procedure is set at 1,500 pesos.
