Mexico City teachers’ union CNTE blocks media over ISSSTE pension law ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) intensified protests in Mexico City, seizing streets and blocking the headquarters of Televisa, TV Azteca, Multimedios and the Bucareli avenue. The union demands the full repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE pension law, a 100 % salary increase, elimination of teacher evaluations and better working conditions.

Demonstrators warned the actions will continue during the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even planning a potential march toward the Banorte Stadium (formerly Azteca). CNTE leaders said the protests will remain peaceful but aim to draw international attention as the tournament places Mexico under global scrutiny. Authorities deployed police and created alternate traffic routes, but reported no clashes. Analysts note that reinstating the pre‑2007 pension system could cost the state several hundred billion pesos, underscoring the high fiscal stakes of the dispute.
