Mexico City to host free La Llorona theatrical performances

A theatrical production of the legend of La Llorona will be held in Mexico City from October 16 to November 8 as part of the Day of the Dead festivities. Written by Luis Huitrón and directed by Angélica Rogel, the play utilizes puppets, shadow theater, and narration to explore potential pre-Hispanic roots and offer a new perspective on the traditional story through the characters of a girl named Xóchitl and her grandmother.

The production will offer 14 free performances across 10 different venues, including the Teatro del Pueblo in the Historic Center and various Utopías in the boroughs of Iztapalapa, Tlalpan, Coyoacán, Iztacalco, and Venustiano Carranza. Access is free but subject to venue capacity.

The legend itself remains a fluid part of Mexican oral tradition, with variations in details and endings depending on the region and the storyteller. While often associated with themes of loss, abandonment, or guilt, the figure of La Llorona continues to evolve through literature, theater, and cinema while maintaining its roots in local community storytelling.
