Mexico City to transform La Merced with new Utopía center

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada has announced a major urban renewal project for the La Merced commercial area. A central part of this initiative involves transforming 17,000 square meters of the abandoned Plaza Merced 2000 into a new ‘Utopía’ center. This facility is intended to provide various services to the workers, residents, and commuters who frequent the district.

In addition to the new community space, the government plans to remodel one of the local markets to serve as a model for public markets in the city. Brugada also introduced a new security program targeting the markets in the area, including Nave Mayor, Nave Menor, and the Casetón, focusing on investigation and prevention to promote peace in the zone.

Infrastructure improvements are already underway, with 40 million pesos recently invested to renovate the electrical system in the Nave Menor of La Merced. This electrical upgrade was implemented following requests from the market's board of directors regarding existing installation conditions.
