Mexico City braces for heavy rains, traffic jams and metro delays

The National Civil Protection Coordination warned of very strong to intense rains across large parts of Mexico, forecasting 75‑150 mm in Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango and 25‑75 mm in many other states. The agency urged citizens to join a national street‑cleaning campaign, keep drainage clear, avoid flooded areas and stay alert for landslides.

In Mexico City, eight social‑movement blockades and operational issues slowed traffic on major avenues and caused Metro Line 3 delays of 8‑10 minutes. The Metro reported good service on eight lines but high passenger volumes on Lines 3 and 8, prompting extra trains to be dispatched.

The city’s “Hoy No Circula” program took effect on 16 July, restricting vehicles with green stickers and plates ending in 1 or 2 to reduce air pollution. Meanwhile, municipal brigades in Toluca continued removing trees toppled by the rains and strong winds, addressing safety risks on streets and sidewalks.
