Mexico City’s flood defenses near completion as rain slows traffic

Intermittent rain on Monday, 6 July 2026, lowered temperatures to 16‑20 °C and caused moderate humidity across the Mexico City metropolitan area. Traffic on major arteries such as Paseo de la Reforma, Insurgentes, the Periférico and Viaducto Miguel Alemán slowed, with travel times roughly doubling, while the Metro kept regular service on all twelve lines. No large‑scale protests or road blockades were reported, and air‑quality remained at an acceptable level.

The national water agency Conagua reported that flood‑mitigation projects in the eastern Valley of Mexico are 90 % finished. Six works—including the expanded Laguna El Salado, the Teotongo and Los Pinos collectors, the Carmelo Pérez collector, the Xochiaca pump and the Laguna de Churubusco retention basin—have together cost about 11.2 billion pesos. Officials said they will be fully operational within about fifteen days, benefiting residents of Iztapalapa, Nezahualcóyotl, Chalco, La Paz and surrounding municipalities. Additional micro‑tunnelling work is progressing in Chalco and Valle de Chalco to further reduce flooding risk.
