Mexico civil society groups launch observatory to track attacks on activists

Civil society organizations in Mexico have launched the Peninsular Observatory for Freedom of Expression and Protest to document aggressions, censorship, and the criminalization of journalists and activists in Yucatán. The initiative, formed by Somos Periodistas, Igualdad Sustantiva Yucatán, Reflexión y Acción Feminista (RAF), and Kanan Derechos Humanos, aims to identify patterns of harassment and advocate for the removal of “crimes against honor” from the Penal Code.

Separately, human rights group ARTICLE 19 is demanding justice for environmental communicator Erik Eduardo Saracho Aguilar six months after an attempted assassination. Saracho, a co-founder of Alianza Jaguar A.C. in Nayarit, has faced systematic harassment, including judicial intimidation and frozen bank accounts, following his denunciations of illegal land occupation and environmental damage. The Nayarit State Prosecutor's Office has yet to bring the intellectual authors of the attack to justice.
