Mexico coach Aguirre names Edson Álvarez as likely starter for World Cup match vs South Korea

Mexico national team coach Javier Aguirre said the red card given to defender César Montes in the opening group match against South Africa will likely see Edson Álvarez start in central defence against South Korea on June 18, 2026. Aguirre explained that Álvarez has been given extensive playing minutes in the three preceding games and intensified training to be ready for a full 90‑minute performance.

In addition to the defensive change, Aguirre indicated further adjustments to the starting eleven. He may bring on Brian Gutiérrez and Israel Reyes, while Gilberto Mora and Jorge Sánchez could replace them on the flanks. Edson Álvarez is also expected to take the central defensive role previously occupied by Montes, who was expelled late in the debut match.
