Mexico coach Aguirre says team learned from past World Cups, keeps roster door open

Mexico national team coach Javier "Vasco" Aguirre told a World Cup panel in Monterrey that the squad has learned from the errors of previous tournaments and that a detailed, careful selection process is under way for the 2026 World Cup. He noted that although a preliminary list of 55 players has been submitted to FIFA, the final 26‑man roster is still pending and will be chosen from that pool.

Aguirre also addressed the status of Toluca forward Marcel Ruiz and Cruz Azul midfielder Charly Rodríguez, who were omitted from the latest training camp but remain on the provisional list. He explained that as long as they stay on the 55‑player roster they retain a chance to be selected, with the final decision pending after the May 11 deadline and contingent on fitness and injuries. Aguirre emphasized feeling well supported by the federation and clubs throughout this process.
