Mexico commemorates the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec
Commemorations are being held across Mexico to honor the 179th anniversary of the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec, the young cadets who died defending Chapultepec Castle during the 1847 US invasion.
In Nueva Rosita, local officials and students gathered at the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec kindergarten to preserve historical memory and strengthen civic values. During the ceremony, Karina Yanet Ríos Ornelas, honorary president of the Municipal DIF, emphasized that the cadets' sacrifice remains a symbol of patriotism and dignity for new generations.
In Campeche, a lesser-known monument dedicated to the cadets stands at the intersection of Central and Adolfo Ruiz Cortines avenues. Erected in the 1950s, the monument features an eight-meter stone column topped with a bronze figure of a cadet. Local residents have recently called for the rehabilitation of the site due to signs of deterioration, including graffiti and poor lighting.
