Mexico Congress calls for enhanced seismic detection capabilities

The Mexican Congress has issued a call to strengthen early detection and warning capabilities for seismic and volcanic activity. A report approved by the Permanent Commission emphasizes that managing risks from these natural phenomena must be treated as a permanent public policy to protect the population, infrastructure, and public services.

The Commission specifically requested that the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) and the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) enhance their detection and early alert systems. This initiative follows a magnitude 7.4 earthquake recorded on July 17, 2026, off the coast of Chiapas, which highlighted existing coverage gaps in detection systems, particularly in geologically active regions.

Lawmakers proposed that the strengthening of these alert systems be supported by scientific and budgetary evaluations to ensure effective disaster prevention.
