Mexico cultural offerings grow 32% under Sheinbaum administration
Mexico’s Ministry of Culture reported a 32% increase in cultural offerings during the first two years of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s administration. According to Secretary Claudia Curiel de Icaza, the country saw 520,000 activities across 32 states, attracting approximately 50 million attendees, a 13% rise in attendance.
A significant portion of the budget, totaling 1.85 billion pesos, was directed toward renovating artistic education institutions, including INAH, INBAL, the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), and the Carlos Chávez School Orchestra. These investments facilitated the intervention of 2,352 spaces and the acquisition of 3,600 assets. Additionally, the government eliminated enrollment fees to ensure free access to arts education.
Support for artistic creation also saw a 45% increase, rising from 1.84 billion to 2.658 billion pesos, benefiting over 180,000 artists through 250 calls for proposals. The administration also highlighted advancements in the film sector, including the implementation of the new Film and Audiovisual Law and the creation of fiscal incentives to attract investment.
