Mexico debates closing militarized schools after student death

The death of a young woman named Dafne in Tamaulipas has sparked calls to shut all militarized schools in Mexico. Engineer Raul Hernández Padilla, national commander of the Pentathlon Deportivo Militarizado Universitario A.C., said the appropriate response is to investigate every institution, punish those responsible and clean up identified problems, rather than an immediate blanket closure. He emphasized that his organization is a non‑profit civil association, not an academy, and does not issue basic or secondary education certificates, so the incident does not affect its image. The discussion follows a determination by the Secretariat of Public Education regarding the schools' status.
