Mexico declines to join 51-nation call for Russian ceasefire in Ukraine

Mexico declined to join a joint declaration signed by 51 countries during the UN General Assembly calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire by Russia in Ukraine. The declaration, presented by representatives from the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Australia, and South Korea, also included Latin American nations such as Panama, Honduras, and Costa Rica.

The statement expressed concern over attacks on civilians and infrastructure, noting that actions in the Black Sea threaten grain exports and global food security. While the signataries urged Russia to adopt a ceasefire stance to facilitate peace negotiations, Mexico opted not to participate in this specific voluntary pronouncement.

This decision follows a bilateral meeting in New York between Mexican Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Following the meeting, Sybiha publicly thanked Mexico for its support regarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mexico’s current stance aligns with a foreign policy prioritizing neutrality and diplomatic dialogue, though the country previously voted in favor of a UN resolution demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops.
