Mexico beats Czech Republic 3-0 to complete first perfect World Cup group stage

Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3‑0 at the Estadio Azteca, becoming the first team in the tournament to win all three group‑stage matches with clean sheets. Goals came from Mateo Chávez (55'), Julián Quiñones (61') and Álvaro Fidalgo in stoppage time. Coach Javier Aguirre praised the squad’s family spirit and warned that the knockout round will demand a new level of focus.

Goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa, playing his sixth World Cup, was subbed in for the final 13 minutes, receiving an ovation as he likely makes his farewell appearance. Ochoa joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to appear in six World Cups. The match also featured the youngest Mexican starter in a World Cup, 17‑year‑old Gilberto Mora. A homophobic chant by a small section of fans was reported during the first half, prompting reminders of past sanctions.

The win secures Mexico’s place as Group A leaders and guarantees a round‑of‑32 spot at the Azteca, with the opponent to be decided. Attendance was 80,824 spectators.
