Mexico defender Israel Reyes eyes starting role after World Cup, Roma transfer talks stall
Mexico international defender Israel Reyes said the 2026 World Cup helped him discover a new, more competitive side of himself. He highlighted the camaraderie with teammates, the enjoyment of the experience and his ambition to become a regular starter for Club América, aiming to begin the Apertura 2026 season in the lineup against Santos Laguna.
At the same time, AS Roma’s recent signing of Greek centre‑back Konstantinos Koulierakis for €15 million has complicated the club’s pursuit of Reyes. Roma had previously offered a lower fee for the Mexican defender, and negotiations were paused after the Greek player’s arrival. The final decision on Reyes’s move is expected by the Serie A transfer‑window deadline on 1 September.
