Mexico Defense Secretary says unauthorized military uniforms in civilian schools are illegal

Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo confirmed that using military uniforms, insignia or ranks by civilians is a federal crime in Mexico. He explained that a 2008 decree removed the Secretariat of National Defense’s authority over so‑called militarized schools, ending a legal framework that dated back to 1943.

The announcement follows the Education Ministry’s order to close all civilian academies that use military symbols by 31 August 2026, a move prompted by the death of a 13‑year‑old girl during a camp at a school in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas. Authorities can now sanction individuals who wear unauthorized military attire in these institutions.
