Zacatecas Deploys 500 Military Personnel to Counter Surge of Violence

After the execution of ten individuals—including businessmen, ranchers and two municipal officials—in the municipalities of Pánuco, Saín Alto and Morelos, the Mexican federal government swung a large security response in the state of Zacatecas. The Secretariat of National Defense dispatched an initial contingent of 100 members of the Army’s Cuerpo de Fuerzas Especiales, arriving via a Boeing 737 from the Santa Lucía air base.

These troops join the 400 soldiers and Guardia Nacional members that were already operating in the region since 19 July. The combined force of roughly 500 personnel now conducts patrols, land reconnaissance and deterrent actions in the conurbated areas of Zacatecas, Guadalupe and Fresnillo, aiming to locate and dismantle criminal organizations and stabilize public spaces. State officials, including Secretary General of Government Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, emphasized that the pacification effort will “not take a step back” and cited the potential use of the federal Operación Enjambre mechanism to further investigate public‑official involvement in organized crime.
