Mexico and U.S. intensify border security against drone use by criminal groups
Mexico and the United States are intensifying security coordination along the northern border to combat organized crime and illegal migration. Mexican Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo confirmed that criminal groups are utilizing commercial drones to monitor law enforcement movements and identify unpatrolled routes for smuggling. In response, Mexico has deployed 165 anti-drone devices along the border.
U.S. Northern Command reported that more than 300 drones linked to criminal organizations have been neutralized at the border this year, with approximately 100 intercepted in August alone. While the U.S. has utilized high-energy laser systems to disable these aircraft, Trevilla stated that Mexico is not currently seeking to acquire similar laser technology, relying instead on its own infrastructure.
Additionally, the Mexican government has deployed 13,000 security personnel to the border region, including members of the National Guard and the Army. Official reports indicate a 51% reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides since the start of the current administration and a 96% decrease in irregular migration flows compared to the previous year.
