Mexico Deputy José Guillermo Anaya Llamas Proposes Mandatory Financial Education in Schools

Deputy José Guillermo Anaya Llamas of the PAN party has introduced a reform to the General Education Law that would make financial education a compulsory component of the curricula for basic and upper‑secondary education in Mexico. The bill, now referred to the Education Commission, calls for a progressive, transversal implementation covering topics such as income and expense management, savings culture, responsible credit use, interest rates, inflation, and debt prevention. It aims to equip students with practical skills to make informed economic decisions, address persistent inflation pressures, widespread credit use, and a lack of basic financial knowledge that have contributed to over‑indebtedness and low savings among Mexican families. The proposal adds new paragraphs to article 30 and creates article 30 Bis of the law.
