Mexico labor reform proposes increasing aguinaldo up to 30 days
Mexican Deputy Eduardo Gaona Domínguez of Movimiento Ciudadano has proposed a reform to Article 87 of the Federal Labor Law to increase the annual aguinaldo (Christmas bonus) based on worker seniority. The initiative has been referred to the Labor and Social Welfare Commission.
Under the proposed progressive scale, workers with less than one year of service would receive a proportional amount. Those with one to two years would receive 15 days of salary, the current standard. The proposal suggests 20 days for three to four years of service, 25 days for five to seven years, and up to 30 days of salary for employees with eight or more years of service.
The deputy stated that the reform aims to strengthen labor rights and improve economic conditions in response to inflation and the rising cost of living. The proposal specifies that employers must make necessary administrative and budgetary adjustments without reducing any existing superior benefits. Existing collective or individual contracts that offer more favorable conditions would remain in effect.
