Mexico digital infrastructure faces power supply challenges amid data center boom

Mexico is experiencing a significant surge in digital infrastructure demand, particularly within the data center and structured cabling sectors. The data center market, valued at $1.06 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $2.27 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence and digital services, with the Mexican Association of Data Centers (MexDC) estimating potential investments of up to $18 billion between 2025 and 2030.

However, insufficient electrical infrastructure poses a major threat to this expansion. EY warns that the ability to provide a stable and continuous power supply is the decisive factor for these facilities. Currently, there is a significant gap between announced projects and available capacity; while 279 megawatts are installed, over 1,730 megawatts have been announced, and several companies are awaiting capacity exceeding 200 megawatts to proceed with investments.

Parallel to the data center boom, the structured cabling market is expected to double in value, reaching an estimated $766.7 million by 2034. This demand is fueled by the need for stable information transmission in sectors such as telemedicine, remote monitoring, and corporate modernization. Geographically, Querétaro remains the primary hub, hosting 72 percent of data center projects, followed by Mexico City and Nuevo León.
