Mexico disappearance crisis spotlighted at World Cup opening

On the day of the 2026 World Cup inauguration in Mexico City, mothers of missing relatives and activists staged a protest inside the Estadio Ciudad de México. They demanded that the government redirect resources from stadium preparations to locate the more than 133,000 people who have disappeared in Mexico, chanting slogans such as “México, campeón en desapariciones.” The demonstration led to several arrests and clashes with police.

Separately, the Committee of families of the 43 missing Ayotzinapa students issued a statement demanding that the Federal Prosecutor’s Office reactivate frozen investigation lines, set up a worktable with the Secretariat of the Interior, and accelerate the extradition of former officials accused of torture from Israel and the United States. The families also called for a mixed commission to review 33 military files that could contain crucial leads. They rejected attempts to criminalize their protests and emphasized their non‑political, human‑rights stance.
