Mexico economists urge public investment in health and infrastructure
Economists and labor leaders in Mexico are calling for a strategic shift in the upcoming federal economic package, emphasizing the need for increased public investment over permanent social programs.
Jorge Alberto Moreno Sánchez of UNAM argues that while social programs address immediate needs, they must be complemented by investment in health, education, and road infrastructure to improve long-term institutional capacity. He specifically noted the need for expanded road networks to support growing freight transport.
Alfredo Hernández Ávila, General Secretary of CROM, stated that the 2027 economic package, estimated at 10.5 trillion pesos, must prioritize job security and wages. He noted that while there is a 12.7 percent real increase in health spending, the budget must ensure the availability of medicines and medical staff. He also highlighted that 45.6 percent of priority federal investment is directed to Pemex and 26.9 percent to railway projects.
Jorge Antonio Acosta Cázares, president of the Veracruz College of Economists, suggested that social programs should address cyclical needs rather than becoming permanent mechanisms. He emphasized that generating wealth through investment in education, scientific research, and infrastructure is essential for sustainable economic growth.
