Mexico Education Secretary links reading decline to screen use

Mexico's Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado, has linked a decline in reading comprehension scores observed in the PISA 2025 results to the excessive use of digital devices and social media platforms among students.

Delgado noted that while Mexico has shown resilience compared to the global decline in reading comprehension reported across OECD countries, the nation is still following the downward trend. He attributed this to a generation of students accustomed to short-form digital content, such as images and frequent topic changes, which leads to lower concentration levels during reading.

In response to these findings, Delgado stated that efforts must continue to promote reading habits both inside and outside the classroom. Furthermore, a consultation involving over 500,000 basic education teachers revealed that more than 81% support the federal government issuing national guidelines to regulate electronic devices within schools.
