Mexico electoral officials debate party affiliation and candidate integrity rules

Electoral Counselor Uuc-kib Espadas has defended the impartiality of electoral bodies, stating that political party affiliation does not legally prevent individuals from serving on electoral councils. Espadas argued that current Mexican legislation only disqualifies those who held party leadership or candidacies within the previous three years for local councils. He criticized the removal of four technical candidates who had served without accusations of misconduct, calling the decision unjust.

Separately, Electoral Magistrate Felipe de la Mata has proposed a project to allow political party representatives to participate in the Commission for the Verification of Candidate Integrity. This follows guidelines from the National Electoral Institute (INE) that originally excluded them. The commission, part of a reform proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum to prevent organized crime infiltration in elections, would allow party representatives to participate with voice but without vote. This proposal addresses a challenge by the Movimiento Ciudadano party regarding the commission's composition.
